I want to donate a suitcase or luggage for a child in foster care.

In Colorado we are lucky to have several non-profits that provide duffel bags, backpacks and/or new luggage for children in care.  Necessary security measures at the county building where our offices are prevent us from being able to accept used luggage, suitcases or other bags.  Used items can be dropped off at your local ARC store. We partner with ARC and are able to send our families there directly. Please only donate suitcases that are gently used and clean.

Do you take clothing, toys, books or furniture donations?

Your generous support makes a significant impact on foster families. Here are ways you can contribute:

Items We Gladly Accept:

  • Freshly cleaned baby gear: cribs, toddler beds, high chairs, strollers, car seats (unexpired).
  • Unopened hygiene products: diapers, wipes, toiletries, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap.
  • Gently-used and laundered bedding: blankets, sheets, comforters, sorted and clearly labled.
  • Shoes: gently-used, clean, all sizes.
  • Suitcases: gently-used, clean, fully functional.

Items We Cannot Accept (with suggestions on where to donate instead):

*We refer families directly to these organizations to meet their clothing needs.

    Agency

    Who founded Be the Source?

Founded as a grassroots initiative in 2016 by former foster parents and current adoptive parents, Renee and Brian Bernhard, “Foster Source” was created to address critical gaps in support for both caregivers and the vulnerable children in their care. In response to the 2018 passage of the Family First Prevention Services Act, Foster Source expanded its programs to better support kinship caregivers in addition to foster parents. With the full implementation of the Act in 2022, the organization became one of the few agencies in the state of Colorado to offer dual support for both children and their caregivers in the child welfare system. In 2025, Foster Source began rebranding to “Be the Source” to reflect its expanded mission and the variety of families it now serves.

Why do foster and kinship families need support?

It is all about the kids.

Child welfare is grossly misunderstood, under-resourced and devalued. Stereotypes of old school foster parents “doing it for the money” are harmful and wrong.

Families are struggling, and support services are lacking. Children are lingering in out of home care far too long. Child welfare is on the verge of doing more harm than good.

It’s time to support all families, reunify children when possible and support lasting and therapeutic permanency when reunification isn’t possible.

    Do you serve kinship families?

Yes we do. We serve both certified and non-certified kinship providers in Colorado.

      Relief Services

      What are Relief Services?

When children enter out of home care in a foster or kinship home, they often come with very little. Caregivers need to focus on connecting with and nurturing the children so that the children can feel safe. Be the Source meets the bigger, material needs of the children so that caregivers are able to direct their attention fully to the children.

How can I get a weighted blanket?

Please submit a request in the caregiver portal. A weighted blanket should be about 10% of a person’s body weight. If for a child, the child must be over 4 years old and weigh more than 40lbs. Always check with your child’s caseworker and pediatrician before using weighted items with children.

Where can I get clothing for the children in my care?
      • We can make a referral for you to shop at A Precious Child in Broomfield.
      • We can make a referral for you to Big Hearts Closet in Aurora.
      • We can make a referral for you to Haven Clothing Company in Arvada
      • We can make a referral for you to Operation Foster Hope in Firestone.
      • You can visit our office in the Adams County Human Services building. We sit in one of the smaller boutiques for A Precious Child. Here, you can shop for about a week’s worth of clothing for each child in your care.

To get started with a referral or a visit to our office, submit a relief request in our caregiver portal.

Where can I get help with (whatever you need)?

Start by submitting a relief request in our caregiver portal. If you don’t see your need listed, click “other” and include as many details as possible so we can best meet your needs. We’re here to support you—please don’t hesitate to reach out.

          Respite Services
